About This Dataset
New Mexico (NM) has 426 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) as defined by the US Census Bureau. This dataset covers all of them — from high-density urban ZIP codes in Albuquerque and Santa Fe to rural and suburban areas across New Mexico's Southwest geography.
New Mexico has a high proportion of low-income and food-desert ZIP codes. This makes accurate, ZIP-level data especially valuable for businesses and researchers focused on federal grant writing.
The demographic core of this dataset comes from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates (2019–2023 vintage, published December 2024) — the gold standard for ZIP code-level statistics. The 5-year estimates pool five years of survey responses to produce reliable numbers even for small or low-population ZIP codes, which is especially important in New Mexico's rural areas.
Flood zone classifications come from the FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL). Each New Mexico ZIP code is flagged for the percentage of its area falling within high-risk flood zones (Zone A, AE, V, and VE designations). This is particularly relevant for real estate, insurance, and lending decisions in New Mexico.
